CancerCare – free counselling and complementary therapy in North Lancashire and South Cumbria
We all need someone to talk to, but sometimes it’s easier to speak to a professional. Cancer affects patients and their loved ones in lots of different ways, and CancerCare provides free professional counselling and complementary therapy for anyone affected by cancer and bereavement in North Lancashire and South Cumbria.
The team behind CancerCare
CancerCare began in 1983 and has helped more than 30,000 local people affected by cancer since then. However, the idea stemmed from Dr Malcolm McIllmurray, a cancer specialist who felt there was a need for cancer support services in 1978 and hired a room where people could speak to a specialist once a week.
Today the team is made up of a dedicated group of trustees, senior management, members of staff, volunteers and fundraisers. Maria Chambers is Chief Executive, supported by Alison Stainthorpe who is Head of Operations, Emma Athersmith who is Head of Fundraising, and Alison Dixey, who is Head of Client Services.
What they do to support cancer patients
The independent charity is dedicated to helping people affected by cancer and other potentially life limiting conditions living in North Lancashire and South Cumbria.
They provide a range of free professional therapy services to help individuals and their families come to terms with and manage the challenges of a serious health condition.
Services include counselling, hypnotherapy, Alexander Technique, aromatherapy massage, group Activities, support groups and a dedicated service for children and young people.
