Something to Look Forward To – giving loved ones quality time together
A family run charity which aims to improve the lives of families touched by cancer across the UK, Something to Look Forward To promote wellbeing, relieve the stress and aid the recuperation of those who are experiencing the effects of cancer and its treatment, together with their families.
The team behind Something to Look Forward To
The charity was founded by Andy and Fiona Coldron, following their own cancer journey. In 2007, having just started a new job following redundancy, Fiona, who was a single mother of two, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Only eligible for statutory sick pay, which was not enough to support her family, she had to carry on working throughout her cancer treatment. It was during this time that the family found the enormous value in having small ‘treats’ to look forward to – a meal out, a night away as a family.
It provided respite from the hospital experiences and gave them a chance to enjoy time together away from the cancer ward. Today, Fiona receives ongoing treatment for incurable breast cancer at the same time as doing her charitable work. In 2017 she was honoured with a British Citizen Award at Westminster for her work with Something to Look Forward To.
What they do to support cancer patients
Their website is a veritable treat of information and lovely things to enjoy. Ultimately, the clue is in their name as they really specialise in providing things for individuals and their families to look forward to. For example, via their site cancer patients and their families can access a variety of free ‘gifts’ donated by companies and individuals. These include free breaks in holiday cottages; restaurant meals; a day at the races; hotel stays; theatre tickets; beauty treatments; tickets for attractions and much, much more.
